The best I can do is study other people's mistakes before I start, and learn from my mistakes I make as I go along. A problem that arises after a few hundred miles would be easy to fix, but one that only pops up after 6 months would obviously take much longer to fix, since it would be another 6 months before you find out if your changes did anything. But in the meantime I'm doing as much research as possible before anything gets welded together and put on an engine. Some problems will only surface with time, but at least I can try to avoid fatal mistakes that others have encountered right from the beginning (such as having the flange shear the studs off from expanding/contracting). I doubt I'll ever proclaim that my part is 100% finished, there's always something you can do to make it just a little better.
